Summer Term 2. Big and Blowsy

An arrangement in the style of 18th century Dutch flower paintings. The bigger the better.

Equipment: a large boat shaped container, oasis.

Flowers and Foliage: as many as you can use. Choose an interesting selection of textures and shapes using complementary colour schemes. The foliage should work well with the flowers but will be secondary.

Step 1: Add the wet oasis to the container.

Step 2: Start by adding the foliage in a haphazard, random way using different lengths and textures. The objective is to hide the oasis.

Step 3: Flowers: start by adding the tallest stems to define the size and framework for the arrangement. Add them randomly - natural exuberance is what you are aiming for. Then start adding the other stems using different heights, textures, colours and shapes to create a dense, busy arrangement. Keep stepping back and turning it to check the balance and mix is right.

Step 4: Flowers: finish by adding the wispy flowers (cow parsley) to balance the density of the main flowers. It finishes off the arrangement well.

Keep the arrangement well watered - it will be very thirsty. I used some scented geranium leaves to give it scent as well.

This is one of the best arrangements we have done. I loved it. And you can do it using flowers at any time of the year.
