Autumn 22. Autumn Trug
A start to the autumn term with a trug full or autumn flowers, leaves and seedheads.
Equipment: Trug, oasis.
Flowers and Foliage: Hydrangeas, roses, scented geranium leaves, agapanthus seed heads, Gerberas, dried foliage.
Step 1: Line the trug (to prevent water spillage) and add the wet oasis.
Step 2: Add the flowers in random order. I did foliage first (geranium leaves, dried), then hydrangeas, then roses, then gerberas, then seed heads. The flowers should always be below the level of the basket handle.
Colour is important for this one. I started with hydrangeas from the garden as my base, a mixture of faded dark pinks and brighter faded white pinks. The roses and gerbera add a pop of colour.
Some interesting advice from Tricia on how to dry hydrangeas: if you put them in wet oasis like this and allow them to dry off naturally as the oasis dries out they will retain their shape and colour well. This is a much better method than hanging them to dry. I will stock up on a large basket of them when I am next in Cornwall to sort a supply of dried hydrangeas for the winter months.
