A linear arrangement is a articular style using tall flowers to create the impression of a structured row. It works well in a long flat container with spring flowers of different heights. I used a round one and it doesn’t have the same ‘linear’ effect.

Equipment: long flat-ish container, oasis, stones

Flowers: A mixture of tall Spring flowers eg. tulips, iris, daffodils, freesias

Foliage and decoration: Tall twigs, bracken, tree ivy with seed heads.

1) Preparation: Place the oasis along the centre, just below the height of the container.

2) Foliage: Use the foliage to cover the oasis, keeping it low and simple.

3) Twigs: add the twigs to create the frame for the arrangement. These will define the height and the negative space around the flowers. I used some bright red dog wood for this.

4) Flowers: Add these starting with the tallest. Place them in lines across the centre - almost like building a regiment of soldiers. Vary the varieties and the heights of them. The long stems help to create that impression of ‘soldiers’.

5) Decoration : Add the bracken to vary the texture. The contrast between the green and colour of the flowers and the bronze of the bracken is striking.

6) Pebbles: add these to the edges of the container to create the woodland look.

It is lovely to see the spring flowers coming back into season again.

This arrangement could also work well using florist frogs and water instead of the oasis.
