Spring term 7. Spring Basket

A collection of spring bulbs arranged in a basket

Using a combination of bulbs and cut flowers to create a basket full to the brim of spring flowers. They should be arranged in small clumps to give the right effect.

Equipment: a basket, oasis, German pins.

Flowers and Foliage: a selection of spring bulbs with bulbs intact - Hyacinths, muscari, crocus. A selection of cut spring flowers: tulips, narcissi, iris, freesias. Moss.

Step 1: Line the basket if needed and add the soaked oasis to the container.

Step 2: Add the hyacinths to the middle of the arrangement. Place them on top of the oasis (with bulbs intact) and pin them to the oasis using German pins or florist wire.

Step 3: Add the clumps of taller cut flowers by inserting into the oasis. I added the iris to one side, the freesias to the other. Make sure to vary the height of the stems.

Step 4: Build up the flowers in clumps: group of narcissi to each corner, tulips or crocus bulbs (leaving the roots trailing) to each side , muscari bulbs filling in the gaps.

Step 5: Finish off by using moss to cover any remaining oasis showing.

The general effect should be really natural.

I used a ceramic container instead of a basket because it will be sitting on furniture and so can’t afford any leaks. The container is Martin’s mother’s.

I love iris so used them as my main tall flowers, with freesias to complement them. The hyacinths, crocus and muscari still have their bulbs intact and can be planted in the garden when they have finished their turn in the arrangement.
