19. Orchard Planting II
I have some new fruit trees to add to the orchard.
The fig (Fig 'Violette de Bordeaux’) comes from the London garden and has been growing in a pot for the last 10 years, so will welcome being planted into the ground. It will be fan-trained between the row of cordons, and will need to be pruned hard every year to restrict the plant to that space. It is usually advised to restrict the roots when planting a fig tree in the ground, but that wouldn’t work for this one.
The two small peach trees (Prunus Persica ‘Melred’) are impulse buys. I spotted the lovely deep pink blossom at our local garden centre and couldn’t resist them. They are miniature 2 year old trees, and will be planted as sentinels at either end of the cordons.
